Instagram’s ‘Edits’ App: Meta’s AI-Powered CapCut Rival is Coming

Meta is stepping up its game with a new video editing app, Edits—and it’s looking pretty promising.

If you missed it, when the U.S. government moved forward with the TikTok ban, there was a lot of buzz about what would happen to CapCut, TikTok’s sister video editing app. Well, Meta saw an opportunity and jumped in with Edits, its own version of CapCut that’ll be free (at least for now) and rolling out in select regions next month.

And honestly? It could be a game-changer.

What Can You Do with Edits?

At launch, Edits will offer:

Up to 10-minute video capture & draft storage
Timeline editing for precise cuts & control
Trending audio & real-time content insights
High-quality recording
Video analytics to track performance

Sounds solid, right? But here’s where it gets interesting:

AI-Powered Video Creation 🚀

Meta is bringing AI into the mix, making it easier than ever to create content—without even recording a single frame.

Some key AI features in the works:

🎥 AI-Generated Videos – Imagine making a full video without actually filming anything. Meta’s AI will create clips for you based on prompts.

AI-Powered Special Effects – Want to change your outfit, lighting, or background with a single prompt? Soon, you’ll be able to. IG head Adam Mosseri recently teased this feature, saying it’ll let users customize their videos in ways that weren’t possible before.

🎬 AI Animations – Turn parts of your video into dynamic, moving elements with Meta’s Movie Gen AI models.

Why This Matters

TikTok’s future in the U.S. is shaky, and Meta is moving fast to fill the gap. Plus, CapCut already has AI tools, but they come with a price tag. If Meta keeps these AI features free, they could pull creators away from CapCut—and from TikTok itself.

Bottom line? If you create video content, Edits might be worth keeping an eye on. It drops March 13, and you can pre-order now from the App Store.
