Instagram Introduces Comments on Stories to Boost Interaction

Instagram’s at it again, rolling out another cool feature to get us all talking a bit more. This time, it's about adding comments directly to Stories. Yep, now you can see comments from your viewers right on the Story itself, visible to everyone checking it out.

These new Stories comments will pop up at the bottom of the screen, just above the control buttons and viewer details. They’re not in your face, but they’re there, ready to spark a little more conversation around whatever you’ve posted. It's basically like having comment highlights right on your Story, encouraging more people to jump in and chat.

Instagram’s been working hard to get us to engage more on the app, especially since a lot of us are sliding into DMs for private convos and sharing. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s chief, even mentioned that we’re all posting a lot more on Stories and sending way more DMs than we are posting to the main feed these days.

This shift has meant less public interaction, so Instagram’s been cooking up new features to turn the tide. Take Notes, for example—those little conversation starters at the top of your inbox? They've been a massive hit, especially with teens, who are creating them at ten times the rate of older users. That’s the crowd Instagram really wants to keep engaged, especially when competing with apps like TikTok.

To keep that momentum going, Instagram’s been expanding Notes to other areas like profiles, Reels, and feed posts, even adding new features to keep it fresh.

Now, with comments on Stories, Instagram’s hoping to recreate that buzz—giving us another way to get conversations going based on what we’re sharing in Stories.

Of course, if you’re not into the idea of comments cluttering your Stories, you can easily turn them off. But leaving them on could be a smart move if you’re looking to get more engagement and, in turn, boost your reach on the app.

Ultimately, Instagram’s betting that more comments will lead to more interactions, which strengthens connections within the app—and let’s face it, that’s something TikTok can’t easily copy.

It’s a pretty neat update that could get more of us talking and sharing again on Stories. So, what do you think—are you ready to start commenting?
