Instagram Chief Hints at Big Changes Coming to Profile Grid Displays

We might be looking at a pretty big shake-up in how we post on Instagram. If you’ve been paying attention, you might’ve noticed that Instagram is messing around with the profile grid display, swapping out the classic square thumbnails for a taller, vertical format. Yep, things are getting stretched out!

Some of you might already see this new look on your profiles—it’s almost like the Reels grid but expanded to cover everything you post. And according to Instagram’s top guy, Adam Mosseri, this change (or something like it) is probably heading our way soon.

Mosseri recently broke it down, saying: “We’re testing a vertical grid, for those who haven’t seen it yet, instead of the traditional squares. Now, squares are from way back when Instagram only allowed square photos. I know this can be a bit annoying for those who meticulously curate their profiles, but I want to do better by today’s content creators. Most uploads now are vertical, either 4:3 photos or 9:16 videos, and cropping those into squares is pretty harsh, so we’re working on managing this transition.”

Makes sense, right? But let’s be real—this could totally flip how we approach our Instagram feeds. While it might seem like a minor tweak, just stretching your images a bit, it could significantly change how your profile looks and how viewers interact with your content.

This also hints at Instagram’s ongoing shift towards video, which means our posting strategies might need to evolve. So, keep your eyes peeled, folks—Instagram’s clearly reworking things to better align with how users are engaging with the platform, especially with video.

Change is coming, and with it, a new way of thinking about how we post and present ourselves on the ‘Gram.
